India's Nikhat Zareen won Gold at IBA Women's World Boxing Championships 2022
Nikhat Zareen wins the Gold medal at the IBA Women's World Boxing Championships 2022.
She won the gold in the 52kg category after defeating Thailand’s Jitpong Jutamas in Istanbul, Turkey. She has become the only fifth woman to win a gold medal at the World Boxing Championships after Mary Kom (record six-time champions), Sarita Devi, Jenny RL, and Lekha KC. This is the first gold medal for India since the last win by Mary Kom in 2018.
Manisha Moun in 57 kg and Parveen Hooda in 63 kg category won the bronze medals. At the end of the championship, India won a total of 3 medals- one gold and two bronze. From 2001-to 2022, India's overall medal tally has gone up to 39 medals, including 10 gold, eight silver, and 21 bronze.
Nikhat Zareen was born on 14 June 1996 in the Nizamabad district of Telangana. In 2011, she won a gold medal at the IBA (amateur) Women's Youth & Junior World Championships in Antalya. In 2014, she won a silver medal in the Youth World Boxing Championships. In 2019, she won a gold medal at Strandja Memorial Boing Tournament in Bulgaria. She works as a general banking officer at the Bank of India.
IBA Women's World Boxing Championships is a biennial amateur boxing competition that is organized by International Boxing Association (IBA). The first championship was held in 2001. 2022 Women's World Boxing Championships was the 12th edition that was hosted by Turkey from 8 to 20 May 2022. 310 boxers from 73 nations participated in the 2022 championship.
The last edition of the Women's World Boxing Championships was held in 2019 in Russia. In the 2019 edition, India won one silver (Manju Rani) and 3 bronze medals (Mary Kom, Jamuna Boro, Lovlina Borgohain).
